HTC EVO Design 4G
Sprint has announced the HTC EVO Design 4G, a $99.99 smartphone that’s clearly aimed at a design-first, global traveler. The EVO Design is smaller and less powerful than last year’s popular HTC EVO 4G, while costing the same (it bears more resemblance to the HTC Hero S on US Cellular). It does, however, boast CDMA and GSM support and is the HTC EVO line’s first “world phone.” Domestically, when not in an area covered by Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network, users fall back to Sprint’s 3G CDMA network.
Encased in the slim aluminum unibody, the EVO Design 4G features a 4-inch, qHD (540 x 960 pixel) Super LCD screen, a single-core 1.2GHz processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a standard 1520 mAh battery that Sprint says offers up to six hours of talk time. Like other HTC devices, it features HTC Sense UI, and ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
“Priced at under $100, HTC EVO Design 4G is the perfect device for consumers looking for both the benefits of 4G and the latest in device style,” said Fared Adib, Sprint VP of product development in a statement. “When matched with one of the Sprint Everything Data plans, our customers will unlock the value of unlimited without worrying about the cost or surprises on their monthly bill.” The EVO Design 4G hits stores on October 23. Google Translate for Android v2.2
Google have just bolted on some extra functionality to their rather clever Google Translate app for Android, with their experimental Conversation Mode feature now supporting more languages.
To start yacking away to a Johnny Foreigner, it’s simply a case of speaking into your phone’s microphone and waiting for the Translate app to translate your words of wisdom and read out the translation in the language of your choice. The person you’re chatting to can then reply into the phone in their own language, and Conversation Mode will translate what they said and read it back to you. English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish now supported, this app could be a real boon for globe-trotting travellers.
However, Google points out that the technology is still in alpha, so factors like background noise and regional accents may affect accuracy, but the more people use it the more accurate it becomes – hence the alpha release. Google adds that while it is striving to expand full Conversation Mode to even more languages, the Google Translate for Android still supports text translation among 63 languages, voice input in 17 of those languages, and text-to-speech in 24 of them. Velocity Micro T408
Velocity Micro is extending its tablet offerings with a pair of new budget-priced Gingerbread models. The Cruz T408 and Cruz T410 are 8-inches and 10-inches respectively (natch), with built-in access to the Amazon App Store and WiFi Internet access. The tablets are available now starting at $239.
Both tablets share identical internals: a 1GHz Cortex processor, 512Mb of RAM, a front-facing camera and an extremely welcome capacitive touchscreen. The screens themselves are oddly mismatched: the 8-inch T408 will have a 4:3 screen, whereas the T410 goes for a full widescreen 16:9 experience. Resolutions weren’t announced, but I’d guess 8oo x 600 and 1280 x 720, respectively. There’s a surprising amount of built-in apps, including QuickOffice, Adobe Flash and the ever-popular Angry Birds. These being Gingerbread tablets, there’s no access to the Android Market or Google apps, but the Amazon App Store should have most people covered. [AC]

Onyx Boox i62 e-reader
Chinese e-reader manufacturer, Onyx, has outed the Onyx Boox i62 e-reader device. Based on the picture alone we can’t help but feel that there are some glaring similarities between the Onyx Boox i62 and Apple’s iPad, but putting that aside, it does look like a rather sleek device. The device will feature a 6” e-ink pearl display with an infrared touch screen sensor. It will sport an 800MHz processor under the hood, 128MB of RAM and 4GB worth of internal storage that you can expand via TF card up to 32GB. It will also support a variety of formats, such as Adobe Epub, PDF, CHM, Mobi, HTML, FB2 among others.
As the device is still under development, there is no word on when it will be made available or how much it will cost, but if you’d like more information, head on down to Onyx’s website. [DR]

Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Amaze 4G
Both the HTC Amaze 4Gand the Galaxy S II are now available for purchase, rounding out T-Mobile’s already broad selection of Android devices with two more great ones. Both of these phones will take advantage of the new HSPA+42 network to offer great download speeds with minimal battery life impact, and let’s be honest — they both look HAWT.
The Amaze 4G is a 4.3-inch qHD display, on top of a stunning body design. The innards are amazing as well, with a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon, 1GB of RAM, the latest version of HTC Sense on the Android 2.3.4 platform, and HTC’s new camera at 8MP. It’ll cost $259 with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in-rebate.
The Galaxy S II takes things a bit further in the size department, with a 4.53-inch Super AMOLED plus display. Under the hood some changes were made from the original Galaxy S II line, to allow the 42 Mbps network to function – but you’ll never notice. The dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon and 1GB RAM make Touchwiz 4 fly. It’ll cost $229 with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in-rebate.[AC]

BlackBerry
Well, that was quick. Mere hours after holding a press conference stating that it didn’t know when BlackBerry users would have their BBM, internet, and email working again, services have begun to come back online. Apparently email is up across the globe, as is BBM. Web browsing, however continues to be “temporarily” unavailable to those on EMEIA networks in Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa and Latin America. There is, naturally, a considerable backlog of messages to get through, but the good news is that all the BlackBerry bits and bytes are flowing freely once again. Hit the source link to get the info straight from the horse’s mouth. [EN]

iPhone 4S
The Bluetooth 4.0 specification could have been finalized in July of last year, butsmartphones supporting the typical are only beginning to hit the market. Of course, the 1st such handset is the iPhone 4S. That the 4S is the primary to deliver its 4.0 wares to the yank public is something that got lost in each of the hubbub surrounding its launch.
One of the crucial biggest selling points of the most recent version of the PAN standard is its low-power mode, though that wont have much of an impact on Apple’s device. What it would enable the most recent iGadget to do however, is act as a hub — collecting data from multiple sensors and accessories simultaneously, which include heart rate monitors and cats . Don’t expect this to be alone available to buy for long, other manufacturers will definitely be squeezing support for the specification into their next flagship device.[EN]
