Google Spends An Estimated $100 Million For A New Office

A couple of months ago it was announced that Apple would be expanding its headquarters with the spaceship-looking Campus 2, and it looks like it won’t be alone in the expansion process. Today it’s been reported that Google will also be expanding with the purchase of a 240,000 square-foot office complex near its headquarters in Mountain View. While Google confirmed the purchase of the office, the company declined to disclose how much it cost.

Called The Landmark, the new office complex is said to house 960 workers at the new office – a far cry from Apple’s humongous Campus 2 that was built for up to 13,000 employees. Google has been snapping up a lot of real estate and properties in the area recently, and The Landmark probably isn’t going to be the last of the company’s purchases. No word on whether Google will be making some renovations to the place, but I wouldn’t put the conversion of the office complex into a green-friendly zone (with solar panels and windmills) past the company.

Google Voice Gets a Spam Filter

2011 07 12 gv Google Voice Gets a Spam Filter

Remember when your legitimate emails were flanked by dozens of grammatically nightmarish blurbs, peddling pills, x-rated services, and Nigerian scams? If you use Gmail, most of that garbage no longer arrives in your inbox, instead making its way to a spam folder, where it’s held for a month before ending its journey at the Google graveyard.

Now, Mountain View is applying that same concept to your Google Voice calls, flagging unsolicited calls, texts, and voicemails, then booting them to a spam folder. The company’s servers use collected data from other users marking similar messages as spam, as well as propriety identification tools, to help ensure that those generic creditor or vacation sweepstakes calls never make it to your phone. And like GMail messages, misdirected calls can be marked as “Not Spam” from within the Spam folder, letting them slip through the fence the next time around. GV users can simply check the box next to “Global Spam filtering” on the Calls tab to activate the feature, or hit up the source link for the full scoop.

Comcast Invites Skype Into Its Cable Boxes, Mobile Apps

samsungtv skypecall 2 Comcast Invites Skype Into Its Cable Boxes, Mobile Apps

The latest announcement at the 2011 Cable Show comes from the seemingly unlikely pairing of Comcast and Skype, who have arranged to enable video calls through the cable box. All it takes is a camera, adapter and ‘specially-designed remote’ to turn HDMI-equipped Comcast boxes into Skype-on-TV machines when they start trials in the next few months. Senior Comcast VP Cathy Avgiris tells the Seattle Times that video will max out at 720p to start but will be ugraded to 1080p eventually. The tie-in will also means Skype features for theComcast Xfinity apps on tablets and phones, but according to Avgiris it won’t “necessarily be limited to triple-play” (TV, phone and internet) customers only.

Skype has already partnered with several TV manufacturers for HD calling in the living room, but working through cable boxes means a much greater prospective installed base. Beyond the still-unanswered questions of pricing and release dates, we’ve already seen enough Cable Show demos that didn’t amount to much (*cough* tru2way) so this will goes on the shelf with the others until it’s spotted in the wild.
