Rooting is the dark side of the Android platform. It opens your phone up to a world of unsanctioned opportunities and typically has carriers swatting you back with illegal network usage fees. So you’ll understand how bizarre it is that Cincinnati Bell is offering Milestone XT720 users software and an instructional video how-to that boots Eclair out, for its Froyo successor. Making use of the widely-popular SuperOneClick app, intrepid owners will be walked through the usual root, back-up and ROM-flashing steps.
But the regional carrier’s no dummy as the procedure ends with users unrooting their devices, freeing the network from unwanted congestion and reducing the risk of a bricked phone. Customers of this Ohio-based provider should check the source for a forbidden peek into Android’s underbelly.

It seems the Samsung Fascinate is receiving another update from Verizon — though minor in comparison to this delicious serving of Froyo — and this time it’s targeting the update process itself. Once you finish pulling in nearly 100MB over Big Red’s network, version ED04 promises to improve the delivery of OTA updates — a blessing if you’ve ever experienced a bricked install. Additionally, missed opportunities will be minimized thanks to a fix that sharpens the phone’s ability to receive inbound calls. Unfortunately, this also means no excuses for “missing” that call from your employer, so you’d best keep that last bit under wraps. It’ll be our secret.

Casio’s macho G’zOne Commando is coming to Verizon on April 28th for a price of $200 on-contract. The Commando strays from a long line of durable dumbphones, and is the first ruggedized Android handset on Verizon’s network.
In addition to meeting 810G military specifications for water, dust, shock, vibration, salt fog, solar radiation, and temperature extremes, it runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) and has a 3.6-inch (480 x 800) display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, microSD slot, WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, and a hotspot feature allowing it to share its 3G connection with up to five devices. And, being built like a tank, it also bundles a handful of apps for outdoorsy types, including a compass, pedometer, star gazer, and thermometer.
If you’ve never handled a rugged smartphone, you’ll get your chance Thursday when it hits Verizon retail stores. Until then, check out the PR after the break for more details.

The best way to get Froyo on your Defy was to drop the thing while eating at a TCBY — thankfully, the water and drop-resistant Motorola handset could take the abuse. Things are a bit easier now, however; the company announced today that the rugged handset is finally getting an Android 2.2 update, hot on the heels of Verizon’s Samsung Fascinate — half a year after the operating system first hit the market and a bit later than originally rumored. T-Mobile’s Android roster is growing in number and sheer benchmarking virility today with the launch of the LG-produced G2X. This handset runs bone stock Android (Froyo today, Gingerbread in the future) atop a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 system-on-chip, and just like its international twin the Optimus 2X, eschews the physical flair and focuses on being the best damn 4-inch smartphone that it can be.
It costs $199.99 on a two-year contract and can be bought online today or in stores starting April 20th. Also scheduled for general availability on that date is the QWERTY slider-equipped Sidekick 4G, though that sleepyhead is missing out on any early web availability — it’s probably too busy adjusting its tricked-out Android skin and checking that its magenta accents are all spotless.
