Kingston has announced a portable storage drive called the Wi-Drive that has been specifically designed to work with iOS devices to expand their ability to store music, videos and files. Best of all, media can be accessed wirelessly which gives the drive its name.
The Wi-Drive works by allowing a PC or a Mac to upload files to the drive using the included mini-USB to USB cable. To access the media, iOS device owners will need to download an app from Apple’s App Store. Once the application is downloaded, users simply need to access their Wi-Fi settings to connect to the Wi-Drive before starting the application. It is through the application that users will be able to access music, videos and any other files on the hard drive without need of a wired connection.
The wireless connection allows for three users to connect simultaneously without streaming performance degradation and works over 802.11 b/g with security provided via a password. The Wi-Drive can even be configured to connect to a wireless access point as well as being compatible with the iPad, iPhone 3G (limited to iOS 4.1.1+) in addition to the iPhone 3GS/4 and iPod touch (3G and 4G).
The Wi-Drive is small enough to fit in your pocket, but is also durable and reliable thanks to its Flash-based technology. The on-board battery is capable of four hours of continuous use and can be charged through the drive’s mini-USB port. Kingston will offer two models of the Wi-Drive with 16GB and 32GB of storage. They are expected to be available for purchase later this month, but no prices have been announced yet.
The Wi-Drive was first demonstrated at CES in January where it was originally codenamed MobiSX. Android users who may feel left out needn’t worry as Kingston is planning Wi-Drive models for Android devices in the near future.
