Nike this week rolled out updates to its Nike+ GPS app, including bug fixes and an auto-calibration feature, which should help improve the accuracy of your run. Also on-board are social features, which push running updates to Facebook and Twitter. The tweets / posts can thankfully be edited before being sent out into the world, but we’d recommend using a bit of discretion before loading up your feeds with the minutiae of your latest workout. The updated app can be downloaded now for $2 from iTunes.

Swype, the gesture-based alternative keyboard setup popular with Android users, is reportedly being ported to jailbroken iPhones via Cydia, according to MobileCrunch. When Swype was first demoed almost three years ago, we theorized it could be used to make typing easier on the iPhone, but Apple never approved the app for inclusion on the App Store. Android users have sworn by the app’s ease-of-use compared to tapping out each letter individually, and it seems some features of the app will finally be making their way to the iPhone, at least if you’re willing to jailbreak it first.
It’s worth noting that this appears to be an unofficial project by Andrew Liu and not something created by the Swype team. With that in mind, it’s perhaps understandable that some of Swype’s features are missing from this initial build, such as the little blue line that follows your finger as you swipe across letters. The app also has limited functionality outside of Apple’s pre-installed apps, and it’s reportedly a bit buggy.

There are, in fact, some alternate keyboard apps for iPhone. ShapeWriter was an early entrant on the store and is similar to Swype, but is no longer available. An alternate keyboard within all your apps is something only jailbreak can make possible. I tried Swype on a friend’s Android phone once, and honestly I couldn’t wrap my head around it. But people who’ve grown accustomed to its somewhat quirky UI claim they type much faster with Swype and have missed having it on iOS, and now those users have a chance to try it out on the iPhone

Monsoon Multimedia is again advancing its Vulkano line of set-top boxes with a feature not found on Sling, TiVo or Roku, adding the ability to make DVR recordings directly to iPad, iPhone or Android devices. While users can still watch TV from anywhere in the world using the Vulkano, the new DVR-to-mobile feature is restricted to WiFi and will only work with the new Blast model. Sure you could store your shows on its internal 160GB hard drive, but this way fans of The Killing on AMC can be disappointed by the season finale later on even while offline. Updates for the platform-appropriate $13 apps should arrive shortly, while Blackberry users are assured the feature is on the way soon for them too.

I would imagine that most people out there are at least familiar with Guitar Hero and music games like it. You can get Rock Bandon the iPhone for instance, but if you want something with a little more movement to it that brings the air guitar to life, the Air Guitar Move concept could be it.
This cool accessory is currently up on Kickstarter looking for funding. Inside the guitar pick is some cool motion sensing tech that allows you to interact with an app that detects the strumming motion of the pick. The hardware and app combo claims to turn your music already on your iPhone into a rhythm game with the motion sensing guitar pick as the controller.

There are 53 “official” Jelly Belly flavors available at present, few (if any) of which are MP3 compatible — strange, really, in an era where pretty much everything else is capable of music playback. The company’s new gadget cases are perhaps the next best thing, though despite the fact that they’ll add a candy-like scent to your iPhone, iPod touch, nano, or BlackBerry (sadly not this guy), biting into them will almost certainly void your warranty — and raise your dental co-pay. The cases are currently available and will run you $15 apiece, the same price as the new Jelly Belly-branded headphones, which are similarly recommended for external use only.

All your sci-fi dreams of being able to talk to your gadgets and have the do your bidding are slowly becoming a reality. Nuance, the company behind Dragon NaturallySpeaking, has been at the forefront of the technology since 1997 and, with the release of 11.5, it has added a few neat tricks to its dictation-taking repertoire. On the desktop side, new widgets allow you to post updates to your Facebook and Twitter accounts simply by saying “post to” you social network of choice before spouting off your status update — perfect for drunk tweeting when those beer goggles make it hard to hit the keys.
Nuance also released the Dragon Remote Mic App for iOS, which turns your Apple device into a wireless mic that beams commands and dictated notes straight to your PC. We’re pretty excited for all this voice control stuff — so long as our computers don’t start refusing our requests in a detached monotone. Check out the PR after the break.

Lamenting the time you restored your iPhone and lost that beloved VLC app because it’s no longer available on the App Store? Cheer up, there’s an iCloud for that. The service allows you to re-download any app you’ve previously purchased on any of your iOS devices — including killed apps. We decided to give it a whirl, testing our luck with an iPhone 3GS humming along on iOS 4.3.3. Upon browsing the Purchases section of the App Store, we beheld Tris, an app that hasn’t been available in nearly three years. Sure enough, we pressed the iCloud icon and within seconds, the ol’ Tetris clone was back in action. So if you were one of the four people that downloaded I am Rich before it was killed, you’ll be sure to enjoy that $1,000 investment for years to come

Verizon iPhone owners, your untethered jailbreaking prayers have been answered. Hacker iH8Sn0w updated the Sn0wbreeze tool, adding support for Big Red handsets running iOS 4.2.7 and finally allowing those who have forsaken AT&T to bring the magic of Cydia to their phones without the cumbersome need for tethering.
The usual caveats apply: you’ll have to get your hands on a copy of iOS 4.2.7 (just do a little Googling) and there is always a very small chance that something could go horribly wrong and you’ll wind up with a very shiny paperweight. Mac users will have to sit this one out — Sn0wbreeze is a Windows-only affair. Hit up the source link to get your iHack on.

Remember when you took your driving test and and had an inspector second-guessing your every stop, turn, signal and lane choice? State Farm’s new Driver Feedback app is like having said individual with you all the time. Simply put, it uses your smartphone’s accelerometer and GPS to gauge your acceleration, braking and cornering habits (sound familiar?) and spit out a score, letting you brag to your (parents / significant other / stranger / the family dog) just how safe and secure you are.
State Farm claims it doesn’t collect any informationand won’t adjust your insurance rates based on your score, which is a bit of a bummer if you ask us — wouldn’t it be nice if you could earn some cash back for perfecting your heel-toe? Either way, you’ll find it for free in the iTunes App Store.
