Research in Motion and Porsche have officially unveiled the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981, a new luxury smartphone that was first seen a few months ago.

The Porsche Design P’9981 runs BlackBerry OS 7 with an “exclusive Porsche Design UI”, and is 11.3mm thin. It’s build from a forged stainless steel frame, and has a “sculpted QWERTY keyboard”, in addition to a hand-wrapped leather back cover.

Other features include a 2.8 inch VGA touchscreen display, HSDPA, NFC, Wi-Fi, GPS, Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app, 5MP rear camera with 720p video recording, 768MB of RAM, 1.2GHz single-core processor, 8GB of internal memory, and “exclusive PINs that help easily identify another P’9981 smartphone user.”

The BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 will be available in Porsche Design stores around the world sometime later this year. There’s no word on the smartphone’s price yet.

It isn’t the first time Porsche ventures into the mobile phone world – the company has also worked with Sagem to make that Porsche Design P’9522 candybar back in 2008.

RIM Giving Customers $100 Worth Of Free Apps As Compensation For Recent Service Outage

bbapworld RIM Giving Customers $100 Worth Of Free Apps As Compensation For Recent Service Outage

The outage that RIM experienced last week was certainly not expected, nor pleasant for customers. In Canada we were lucky as BlackBerry users were only without access to emails/BBM for just over a day, other countries such as Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa were without service for over 3 days. The outage was caused by a core switch failure and was completely resolved early Thursday morning. A recent report estimated the downtime would have cost RIM over $100 million, but customers – consumer and business – were curious how they’d be compensated for their frustration.

In a press release this morning RIM said “as an expression of appreciation for their patience during the recent service disruptions” they will give impacted customers a selection of apps valued at $100 (USD). In addition, enterprise customers will also be given 1-month of free enhanced technical support.

Doesn’t this remind you of the Apple iPhone 4 “Antennagate” occurred? Apple was running in every direction to calm the storm of people loosing reception due to the “death grip”. At the end of the date the millions of frustrated and loyal customers were given a free case.

RIM noted that the “selection of premium apps” will be available staring this Wednesday until December 31, 2011. The complete list has about 12 apps, but there are “more to come”:

- SIMS 3 – Electronic Arts
- Bejeweled – Electronic Arts
- N.O.V.A. – Gameloft
- Texas Hold’em Poker 2 – Gameloft
- Bubble Bash 2 – Gameloft
- Photo Editor Ultimate – Ice Cold Apps
- DriveSafe.ly Pro – iSpeech.org
- iSpeech Translator Pro – iSpeech.org
- Drive Safe.ly Enterprise – iSpeech.org
- Nobex Radio Premium – Nobex
- Shazam Encore – Shazam
- Vlingo Plus: Virtual Assistant – Vlingo

Mike Lazaridis, RIM co-CEO, said “We are grateful to our loyal BlackBerry customers for their patience. We have apologized to our customers and we will work tirelessly to restore their confidence. We are taking immediate and aggressive steps to help prevent something like this from happening again.”

RIM BlackBerry Curve 9830 RIM Confirms New BlackBerry Bold 9790 And Curve 9380

Although they still haven’t been properly announced, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 and the BlackBerry Curve 9380 have been recently confirmed by RIM on its developer’s blog, where simulators for both devices are now available.

According to the Canadian company, the 9380, which could be launched under the name of BlackBerry Curve Touch, features a 3.2 inch touchscreen display with 360 x 480 pixels. We also know – from previously leaked details – that the 9380 (pictured below) should come with NFC, a 5MP camera with 720p video recording, and an 800 MHz processor.

As for the Bold 9790, this will feature a 2.44 inch touchscreen display with the same 360 x 480 pixels resolution, full QWERTY keyboard, NFC, 5MP camera, 1.2GHz processor, and 8GB of internal memory.

RIM didn’t say when the new BlackBerry 9380 and 9790 will be launched, but it should happen before the end of the year. We’ll let you know when we have more details on this.

RIM Gives Tips On Extending BlackBerry Battery Life

10 BlackBerry Storm RIM Gives Tips On Extending BlackBerry Battery Life

Now that some of the BlackBerry devices feature larger displays, they are subjected to the same amount of battery drain that most smartphones face today. We all know there is a price to pay for larger, full-colored displays. Well, the folks over at the official BlackBerry blog have decided to write a primer to help those of you who want to squeeze in an extra few hours of battery life from your BlackBerry phones.

It appears that apps left open (even when they’re not in use) can affect the battery life of BlackBerry devices, so close any apps that you aren’t using. Another tip (which works on all smartphones) is to turn off connections that aren’t in use. Turn off WiFi when you’re not in range or not planning to use it, the same thing goes for Bluetooth and 3G. However, if you’re in a location with weak 3G coverage but you have WiFi available, turn on WiFi instead.

Other tips include using a holster, enabling auto on/off, and changing the brightness of the display’s backlight. While all these tips should be second nature for regular smartphone users, I learnt something new – using a cotton swab or dry cloth to clean the metal contacts of the battery and the phone every few months should help as well. Anyone has tips to share about extending battery life (be it for BlackBerry or any other phone) drop a comment below. Be sure to check out our Android battery life guide as well.

How RIM Could Save Itself

How RIM Could Save Itself

Posted on 16 September 2011 by eric

colt2 How RIM Could Save Itself

RIM just reported earnings that were even more miserable than expected. We’ve already said why the company is cooked. But is there any way it can be salvaged? Well, just maybe there is.

You ready, RIM? It’s time we had a talk.
Stop Leaning on Enterprise

You know who made BlackBerry popular? Companies, who valued the handsets’ security and their keyboards and their messaging systems in a pre- and nascent-smartphone world. Then consumers started joining in on the fun, because employees and consumers are often the same people! But consumers have abandoned ship at an alarming rate, and even companies are realizing that if they just let their employees use their own smartphones for work they’ll be off the hook for massive annual hardware buys and—more crucially—dozens/hundreds/thousands of data plans.

You know who else leaned on enterprise? Windows Mobile. And from that heaping trainwreck arose Windows Phone, one of the most promising developments in mobile in years. So get the consumers back, RIM. They’re going to be the ones who lift you up.

It’s not just phones, either. The BlackBerry PlayBook wanted so desperately to be the definitive enterprise tablet, but that’s kind of like being the definitive Cracker Barrel sommelier; the two just don’t go together. Not right now, anyway. Either give the PlayBook some consumer chops or let it die a graceful death.

Bring in New Management

Look, all respect to Mike Lazaridis for being one of a handful of tech CEOs left with serious engineering chops. That doesn’t mean he’s a good CEO.

And even if he and co-CEO Jim Balsillie had been doing everything right and just run up against some sheer dumb luck, there comes a time when you need a fresh set of eyes and brains on the problem. For RIM—which has been doing many things wrong!—that time was probably sometime in the middle of the BlackBerry 7 development process.

If anything, a change would help morale, which was already demostrably in the gutter even before those recently announced layoffs.

Android Is for Quitters

BlackBerry App World is like the sad broken-down amusement park your dad takes you to because when he was a kid it was the only place that had a log flume. You got behind with devs. You got beat. Get them back. Microsoft’s doing it—slowly, surely—with Windows Phone, and you can too. It’s going to take money, sure, but considering how many wasted investments you’ve been willing to make recently you might as well splurge on something useful.

You’ve got time before QNX makes its phone debut. Use that time to line up as many major devs as you can. Don’t just make BlackBerry a QWERTY storefront for Android apps. We have that already. It’s called Droid.

Make Sure QNX Works Right

And honestly, there’s no need to hit the Android panic button. You still shipped 10.6 million BlackBerries last quarter (although who can say how many you sold). Your QNX-based phones aren’t going to be a game-changer, but they could get you back in the game, you know? But not if you rush it, and definitely not if you push it out without BES/BIS email/calendar support. That’s like releasing a Twinkie with no gooey filling.

BlackBerry 7 is okay. It’s fine. It’s not great. We all know that. And you basically acknowledged on your earnings call today that it’s a stopgap until QNX gets here. But it’s a good enough stopgap that you can run with it for as long as you need to. You also just said that a year from now BlackBerry 7 would still represent the majority of your sales. Works for me! As long as QNX eventually gets a major splash.

You’re going to tell us more about QNX plans in October, and we can wait until then. And I’ll take you at your word today that you’re waiting until everything’s perfect to release it. Then again, you seem to think you did that with Torch, which, nope!

Quit It With That BBM Music Crap

Seriously, what are you thinking? Did this cost you any money? Because you wasted all that money.

Accentuate the Positive

You know what, RIM? We like you. You’re the underdog. You make some handsome hardware, the best QWERTY mobile keyboard out there. And there’s no reason mobile shouldn’t be a four-horse race. That benefits competition, which benefits everybody. Your phones are secure, they’re reliable, they’re reasonably priced. All that’s great.

And hey, you’re still making lots of money! Sure, you’re not making it as fast as you used to, but $4 billion of revenue is a lot of Curves. And there was still $329 million of net income in there which, even though it’s less than half the profits of last year’s analogous quarter, is still enough to fund some solid R&D.

So you know what? Be RIM. Make BlackBerries. Don’t make huge investments in shoddy tablets no one asked for, don’t push out half-baked software no one likes, don’t decide months too late to manufacture a music service no one needs. People don’t go to the circus for the sideshow, they go to see the elephants. So give us some freaking elephants, already.

There’s hope, RIM. A tiny little sliver of hope that you can turn this thing around and be, well, let’s not say the company you once were. Let’s say you could turn this thing around and survive. I certainly hope you do. But it’s going to take whole lot more than you’ve been showing us.

appworld3 1 RIM Releases BlackBerry App World 3.0 Beta, Brings Lot Of Features & Improvements!

blackberry app world

RIM just rolled out App World 3.0 beta to its Beta Zone users, bringing with it a redesigned home screen created to “let you quickly find what BlackBerry app, game or theme you’re looking for.” Seems a bit overdue if you ask us, but better late than never, as the idiom goes. There are also new home screen icons for Games and BlackBerry Themes — the store’s two most popular categories.

You can also flick between app summaries, screenshots, and reviews from one screen, and share links to your favorite apps over Twitter, Facebook, email, SMS, and BBM. You may find it difficult to get too excited about an app store update, but for those of us who use BlackBerrys despite the occasionally less-than-stellar app experience, anything RIM can do to streamline the procurement process is more than welcome. torch640 5 New BlackBerry Torch Commercials On Youtube

You might have heard that RIM is currently working on the Blackberry Torch 2 at the moment. The new Torch is said to have a 1.2GHz processor, 14.4Mbps triband HSPA, a VGA display at the original Torch’s same 3.2-inch size, and BlackBerry OS 6.1. Maybe this is the reason RIM is trying to push the Blackberry Torch sales with launches 5 new video commercials featuring the torch.
RIM has just put up some more BlackBerry commercials up on their YouTube channel. Once again, these feature the one and only BlackBerry Torch, which as you know has most of the spotlight when it comes to RIM’s product line. In these clips, you’ll see dance artists, chefs, and surfers talk about their stories on how they use BlackBerry. I think RIM should launch these kind of commercials for the BlackBerry PlayBook – soon. Check out the video after the break.
Visit www.dialaphone.co.uk/ and check out the BlackBerry Torch online now!

torch9800amazon Amazon Drops BlackBerry Torch To $99.99, is this because of the only 150.000 Sold after the release?
It seems that Research in Motion has been heavily marketing their BlackBerry Torch. As we know The Torch is set to be the main competitor of Samsung Galaxy S, iPhone 4 and Droid X. but it looks like the RIM’s plan is not doing well like RIm has expected before.

RIM needed a hit because the company only sold 150,000 Torches At Launch, I am not fan of the Torch, and we heard that RIM is planning to make a price cut for the handset. Maybe that’s also why Amazon.com make a $100 drop in price, but with a 2-year contract of course. So if you are one of the blackberry fan and you want to get your hands on BlackBerry OS 6 this could be the best option right now.
